Workshop 5-6pm FREE
Performance 7:30pm $5-20 sliding scale
Hosted by local artist Taina Asili, www.TainaAsili.com

This internationally acclaimed Ensemble from Philadelphia presents a complete and unique experience of a cappella harmonies and traditional West African percussive rhythms. They are a vivacious, all-women performing arts ensemble and have performed to standing ovations at the Women & Earth Conference, Ghana, West Africa, The Kennedy Center for Performing Arts, Washington, D.C., the National Women’s Music Festival and many other venues throughout the country and abroad. The “Voices Of Africa,” share the joy of their music, which spans the African Diaspora, through traditional African and African-American songs, message music, gospel and inspirational percussive rhythms. www.VoicesofAfrica.net

The Workshop: Workshop includes a demonstration of VOA music and instruments; West African percussion patterns; hands on interactive with participants and ends with a drum circle. The vocal and percussion presentation spans the African Diaspora.

West African Percussion Instruments Used:

The drum we use in our workshop is the sakara drum, a small hand held drum made in Nigeria, West Africa. It provides excitement for those who hear and play them. As a matter of fact, this drum is so easy to play that everyone can participate who has a drum. Participants will observe other traditional percussion instruments such as the Sekere (shay-ka-ray), sangba drum, djundjun, djembe and Agogo (ah-go-go), the double headed bell, being played. According to the time allotted, participants will also experience,

West African Dance; West African Songs; and West African Storytelling. Workshop will end with a drum circle, an Interactive, which includes West African percussion patterns utilized during the workshop.

OUT OF THE MARGINS 2010 presents three performances and workshops from June until August hosted at Grand Street Community Arts, promoting creative exploration and expanding diversity of expression.
