The South End of Albany, 61 Elizabeth St.

South End Earth Day is an event for the South End neighborhood in Albany to get together to clean up our neighborhood, turn our vacant lots into community spaces, plant trees, flower and vegetables’ learn about nutrition, eat food and hear great music by community members. It is organized by members of AVillage, Inc., the South End Neighborhood Association, the Radix Center and Grand St. Community Arts and sponsored by Waste Management.

Last year was a great success and we hope to pick up where we left off, improving on the work we did last year and showing off new projects including the plan for a Catherine St. Family Park.

Here is the day’s itinerary:

12 – Kickoff

12:30 – Work on lot projects

3 – Walk around clean-up

4 – Community Dinner

5 – Music

Youth Organics Garden Shares now available

Interested in buying locally grown, fresh food? Buy a Garden Share with Youth Organics!

Now available for 2012!

Cost: $130 for the Summer-Fall season (Approximately Mid-June to Late-October)
Pick Up: Every Thursday from 5 PM – 7 PM, pick up you share at the Youth Organics Garden.

By purchasing a Garden Share, you are investing in the success of our program. The money is used to pay the teen stipends for our spring program and to buy garden supplies to get us up and running for the season.

Drawing and Illustration Class on Saturdays!

Our Drawing and Illustration Class now happen at Trinity Alliance (15 Trinity Pl) every Saturday from 11AM-2PM. Classes are FREE. Please make sure you bring your own pencils! If you have any questions, feel free to call the office at (518) 463-2222.

GSCA’s Drawing & Illustration Class, taught by Malik Huggins and Alec Acevedo, has moved!
Classes are on Saturdays from 11AM – 2PM, at Trinity Alliance, 15 Trinity Pl.

Classes are FREE.

Please bring your own pencils and drawing materials.

Malik Huggins graduated from the Fashion Institute of Technology and worked as a merchandise stylist in Manhattan for thirteen years. Besides fashion illustrations he specializes in drawing portraits and the human form.

Youth FX Film Selected to Screen at Woodstock Film Fest

Just wanted to share the great news we got this week that Seeds Of Hope, on of our 2010 Youth FX films has been selected to screen at The Woodstock Film Festival this fall. The Woodstock Film Festival is one of the premiere film fests in the country and this is a great honor for our program and our amazing youth filmmakers. NEW PROGRAM! Todd-O School of Hip-Hop

Hip-Hop culture can be liberating, motivating and positive energy in a young persons life. The purpose of this class is to cultivate talented youth into productive adults through the arts. We use Hip-Hop to help these young people:
1. Identify themselves in a positive light
2. See a bigger world
3. Develop a life plan for themselves

…This is a selective class. A casting call will be held to select students based on their lyrical ability, presentation and ability to make it all scheduled events. The casting call will be open to all boys and girls ages 10-17. We are looking to have students represent various Capital Region Cities: Albany, Schenectady, Troy, Rensselaer, Watervliet, Colonie, Latham, Amsterdam, etc.

*All Students Must be accompanied by a Legal Guardian to the casting call.

The Casting Call: $5 Donation
Fri July 1st – 6-9pm
Sat July 2nd 10am-1pm

Orientation/Rehearsal : Wed July 6th, 2011
6-7pm – Ages 10-14
7-8pm – Ages 14-17

Classes will meet Every Monday Night July 11th – August 29th from 6-9pm:
6-7:30pm – Ages 10-14
7:30-9pm – Ages 14-17

About the Class:
-Each class will be video taped and aired on Public Access TV.
-Students will follow our 8 week curriculum and may be quizzed at the end of each class. Quizzes may include written, multiple choice, audio, visual or multi-media elements.
-Instructors will challenge students to improve their lyrical skills and their content.
-Each student will be asked to perform a weekly review to increase their critical thinking
-Each student will write and perform a verse each week (NO CURSING).
-Students are allowed to 2 absences. 3 absences disqualifies you from top ratings.
-Verses will be recorded, published and voted on by the general public.
-The Top Students at the end of the class will get to produce a ‘Stop the Violence’ Single with some of the areas Top Producers and Studios. This includes a Music Video and various other promotions (Print, Internet, etc).
-All graduating students will be featured on another ‘Stop the Violence’ Compilation to be Distributed and Promoted by Hollywood Hustle.

10 Week Schedule
Week 0: Wed. Jul 6th – Orientation / Dress Rehearsal
Week 1: Mon. Jul 11th – The History of Hip-Hop
Week 2: Mon. Jul 18th – Who Am I
Week 3: Mon. Jul 25th – The Role of Women in Hip-Hop
Week 4: Mon. Aug 1st – Vocabulary
Week 5: Mon. Aug 8th – Metaphors & Euphemisms
Week 6: Mon. Aug 15th – The Art of Storytelling
Week 7: Mon. Aug 22nd – The Battle Rap
Week 8: Mon. Aug 29th – The Grades and Awarding of Prizes
Week 9: Mon. Sep 5th – The Recording of the ‘Stop the Violence’ Compilation – in Studio
