It’s starting to feel like spring, and just in time, because in less than a month, Catherine Street will be getting it’s family park!

This means we need your help!

Build dates are Thursday, May 16 through Saturday, May 18. We need volunteers to help unload and store the playground pieces on Thursday, and will need help assembling the pieces Friday and Saturday.

Have you ever built a playground before? Impress your friends with your physical prowess and come help us out!

Here’s Why:
Morton Avenue and Catherine Street are being rebuilt by the Albany Housing Authority, and nearby Alexander Street and Delaware Street are getting new home owners thanks to Habitat. More residents means more children, and they need a safe place and facilities that encourage play and physical exercise. The new playground on Catherine Street fills that need, and the new gardens on the other side of the street (reclaimed from neglected vacant lots) provide a new gathering space for neighbors that encourages connection and community.

On behalf of Youth Organics and Grand Street Community Arts we would like to thank all of our donors, volunteers, and those in attendance for the Secret Cafe! We know the date was difficult for people to attend with holidays, but were so glad to have you all there.

The South End of Albany, 61 Elizabeth St.

South End Earth Day is an event for the South End neighborhood in Albany to get together to clean up our neighborhood, turn our vacant lots into community spaces, plant trees, flower and vegetables’ learn about nutrition, eat food and hear great music by community members. It is organized by members of AVillage, Inc., the South End Neighborhood Association, the Radix Center and Grand St. Community Arts and sponsored by Waste Management.

Last year was a great success and we hope to pick up where we left off, improving on the work we did last year and showing off new projects including the plan for a Catherine St. Family Park.

Here is the day’s itinerary:

12 – Kickoff

12:30 – Work on lot projects

3 – Walk around clean-up

4 – Community Dinner

5 – Music

Cost: $130 for the Summer-Fall season (Approximately Mid-June to Late-October)
Pick Up: Every Thursday from 5 PM – 7 PM, pick up you share at the Youth Organics Garden.

By purchasing a Garden Share, you are investing in the success of our program.  The money is used to pay the teen stipends for our spring program and to buy garden supplies to get us up and running for the season.
