|Grand Street Community Arts proudly thanks Albany Housing Authority for its continued commitment to the GSCA Youth Organics! Program and more importantly Albany’s South End. For many years AHA has designated the garden space at Hawk and Third Avenue (the “YO! Garden”) for youth partnered with YO! to bring urban gardening to young people and countless South end residents. In the fall of 2013, GSCA under then new Executive Director Edwards Grimes Carrion, GSCA found it necessary to suspend and then re-engineer Youth Organics’ (YO!’s) decade-old program in order to incorporate an educational and artistic core. Within months, new program director Amani Wilson was brought in to institute the first phase of changes while building upon the accomplishments of prior leadership. Nearly five dozen children and youths from the Albany Summer Youth Program, Boys and Girls Club of Albany, and the Schenectady JCC participated in the program. Yo!’s success is due in no small part to the generosity of Mr. Charles Touhey, Albany Housing Authority Executive Director Steve Longo (and AHA’s continued multi year commitment to the YO! Garden’s future) and the Albany’s Westminster Presbyterian Church.
This year, GSCA’s YO! will be expanding programming at the YO! Garden, repairing and building new boxes, and of course initiating massive reseeding. Additionally, the planning of the AHA!Stage (Albany Housing Authority) @ the YO! Garden has officially begun. Stay tuned.
